The University of New Mexico was established by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of New Mexico in 1889. It was to be located in Albuquerque. Elias Stover was appointed the first president. In 1912, David Ross Boyd, the University of New Mexico's fifth president's investiture ceremony was held in the old Albuquerque Opera House.
